KUNA Overview
The Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA) is a 3-day experiential learning conference in which students participate directly in simulated international diplomacy. KUNA offers students the opportunity to experience the richness of cultures from around the world, develop empathy, and hone their critical thinking skills while engaging with a wide variety of perspectives and global issues.
Representing Countries
Each delegation selects the country or countries they choose to represent on a first-come, first-served basis using the Intent & Country Request Form. Countries must be represented by at least 6 Ambassadors (Delegations with 1-11 students can represent only one country), up to a maximum of 20 Ambassadors per country.
As Ambassadors emulating the culture and diverse interests of UN member countries from around the world, students dive deeply into the culture of another nation and are encouraged to re-examine the world from a new perspective. Students develop solutions for international issues by writing, presenting, debating, and voting on UN Resolutions.
Students also celebrate cultural diversity by representing aspects of their country’s culture and traditions with a Booth in our Global Village, Country Signs & Flags during our Parade of Nations, Cultural Attire from their respective nations, and cultural performances on our International Stage.
Program Areas
In addition to representing the cultural aspects of their countries, students will also participate in one of four Program Areas: the General Assembly (Most Delegates), the Security Council (One Delegate per Country), the International Court of Justice (Limited Availability), or the Media Corps.
Leadership
Presiding Officers are elected or appointed by students to serve as Assembly leadership, and work with Supporting Officers to ensure that their respective Program Areas are running smoothly. All Officers are supported by YMCA professionals, advisors, alumni, and parent volunteers.
Students interested in running for an elected Presiding Officer position should review the Candidate and Election guidelines in preparation for their campaigns.
